Kimbe Port Coastal Wharf
PNG Ports Corporation desired to expand Kimbe Wharf in New Britain Island, Papua New Guinea. The existing small ship wharf was demolished to make room for a new coastal wharf. The new wharf reduced berthing demand for the existing overseas wharf and facilitated cargo vessels up to 5000DWT.
The dimensions of the new wharf was 101m by 18m. The wharf structure was a grillage of steel tubular piles which supported concrete pile caps. The wharf deck consisted of a series of precast concrete beams and in situ stitching to join the structural units. In addition to the deck on piles, there was a berthing system consisting of a series of fenders attached to the pile caps and a mooring facility consisting of a series of bollards on the wharf and a mooring buoy system. The area of Kimbe is seismically active
The scope of work included independent tender design review covering all marine works.
