Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) wished the extend the Rabigh Power Plant with a capacity of 2400 – 2800 MW. Doosan were awarded the overall EPC contract and they, in turn, awarded the marine civil subcontract to Huta Marine.

Huta awarded the design services to COWI. The design comprised these elements:

• Seawater intake forebay
• Intake pumping station
• Headwall for future desal plant
• Seawater intake channel
• Intake pipe
• Outfall channel
• Shore protection
• Discharge channel and outfall structure.

One of the issues that needed to be resolved was the potential intake of suspended sediment into the intake pipes and, thus, into the plant cooling water basin.
